Isaiah Philip

Isaiah Philip is a contemporary Nigerian artist from Ebonyi State, born in Kaduna and currently based in Detroit, Michigan. He is pursuing his Master of Fine Arts in Painting at Wayne State University, where he also serves as a Graduate Teaching Assistant for Foundational Drawing. Working across oil, acrylic, charcoal, and mixed media, Isaiah’s practice bridges hyper-realism, conceptual figuration, and abstraction to explore portraiture as a space of emotional, cultural, and historical depth. Deeply influenced by his Nigerian heritage and his evolving experiences in the African diaspora, his work meditates on themes of identity, belonging, and representation, often portraying Black men and women as carriers of dignity, resilience, and beauty.

Isaiah’s paintings are deeply personal and rooted in storytelling a celebration of the human form, spirit, and the cultural symbols that shape memory and meaning. Through layered surfaces, patterned compositions, and meticulous attention to form, he investigates how beauty exists in its diversity not as a single standard, but as a collective essence that binds people across time and geography. His visual language honors African traditions while engaging in a global conversation on contemporary art, identity, and self-definition. In 2023, Isaiah participated in Who I Am, a group exhibition held in Lekki Phase 2, Lagos, Nigeria. He is a recipient of the MiraCAF Foundation Scholarship and the Graduate Teaching Assistantship Award from Wayne State University, which support his ongoing academic and creative pursuits. Building his career between Nigeria and the United States, Isaiah continues to develop a body of work that reflects both his origins and his vision of a connected, expressive, and evolving Black identity.
