Lisa Spindler

Lisa Spindler is a Detroit-born fine art photographer best known for her black-and-white portrait and figurative work, alongside documentary projects chronicling the rebuilding of Detroit and experimental studies of industrial objects and architecture. For the past 40 years, Spindler has built a vast archive of imagery spanning both analog film and digital files.

Spindler’s work has appeared in many prestigious publications, including the New York Times magazine and Smithsonian. Her photographs have been featured in solo and group exhibitions, galleries and museums, including the Detroit Institute of Arts. Her portrait work was recently displayed in the group show “Harvest, The Quiet Power of Cultivating Artistic Legacy.” This exhibition honored mentorship and deep-rooted generosity that define Detroit’s creative legacy. Lisa’s downtown Detroit studio serves as a private curated space where she creates, experiments and displays her artwork and artifacts. Her previous studio Spindler Project was featured in Michel Arnaud’s book “Detroit: The Dream is Now” published by Abrams.

Spindler‘s rare sensibility and raw approach to photographing is an important part of her process. She is able to maintain an intimate connection between the camera and her subject matter, which translates into the photographs that she creates.
